Amelia Butcher is a Vancouver-based visual artist and educator with a sculptural, pottery, writing and drawing practice centered in clay. She graduated from Emily Carr University in 2013 and is a founding member of the Dusty Babes Collective. From 2015-2021 she lived and worked out of their communal space in the Surrey studio of the late great Don Hutchinson. Now based in Vancouver, she is a maker, instructor, technician, parent and dedicated volunteer with the Potters Guild of BC community kiln. She makes objects that are self-conscious of their own act of making, that wrestle between drawing and sculpture, fiction and non-fiction, imagined and observed narratives. Sculpture, figuration, illustration and pottery swim together freely in her practice as well as a great curiosity for materials. Metallic oxides, sticky porcelain and heat are recruited into telling stories about science, family, animal, vegetable and mineral.
