Amanda Wood is a Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in the overlooked. Shaped by mixed ancestral lineages, her work dwells in rupture and repair, gathering meaning from what is easily missed. For Amanda, cloth is never just material. It is a subject with agency, a quiet archive of touch, time, and meaning. As a hand weaver, she knows cloth from the inside out: the way it holds a fold, conceals a shadow, remembers a gesture. Cloth keeps secrets. It hides its own structure, its underside, the tension running through it. Her intimate knowledge of weaving led her to ask what might be revealed through translation into other materials. Working in clay with makeshift tools, she coaxed forms from discarded cloth into stillness, freezing folds, cavities, and hidden undersides. The result is a strange familiarity. These forms are recognizable and yet not, cloth rendered in a language it was never meant to speak, its softness held in something unyielding. What you think you know shifts. The fold you have touched a hundred times becomes something you are seeing for the first time. To experience these works is to unknow something familiar, and find more there than you expected.
