BIO

Lydia Avsec is a Victoria-based painter, graphic designer, and illustrator whose studio practice explores perception, distance, and shifting visual relationships. Working primarily with layered abstract compositions, Avsec constructs non-representational environments that dynamically evolve based on the viewer's proximity and angle of observation. Her paintings translate the organic palettes and textures of the natural world into a structured, expressive visual language that balances intuitive experimentation with precise spatial harmony. 

Drawing from her extensive background in graphic design, her work exhibits meticulous attention to composition, colour theory, structural balance, and visual rhythm. Alongside her fine art practice, Lydia is an award-winning designer and the founder of Copilot Design (established in 2009), a boutique studio serving clients primarily across Vancouver’s arts sector. Her professional design career spans studios and agencies in Ottawa, Calgary, and Vancouver. In addition to print and identity design, she bridges design and fine art by creating gouache illustrations on board for projects from concept to completion, with works widely featured on Vancouver's regional transit networks and public shelters.

Lydia has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions across Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, and Victoria, and is an active member of the Vancouver Island Visual Arts Society (VIVAS). She maintains a studio practice at the Ministry of Casual Living.
