Learn how to make your own lay-flat sketchbooks using one of the world’s oldest binding methods.

In this 4 hour workshops, students will learn how to: test for paper grain and transform large sheets of paper into signatures, create hard covers with book cloth and decorative paper, and sew a sketchbook using the signature Coptic stitch.

This workshops is perfect for artists who want to learn how to make their own completely custom sketchbooks.

All tools and materials are provided.

Tools and materials supplied: paper, end papers, book board, book cloth, PVA glue, binding thread, metal ruler, cutting mat, craft knife, bone folder, glue brush, curved needle, tear bar.

Participants are not required to bring anything, although they are welcome to bring any decorative paper they may wish to work with.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Ember Muninn is best known for their exploration of the imaginal realms through large-scale abstract acrylic paintings and artist’s books that invite viewers to step through to another dimension.

Ember received a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2011, with a focus on Printmaking and Book Arts. They have exhibited in galleries across BC.

In addition to their personal practice, Ember has developed and taught bookmaking workshops for over ten years. They are passionate about inspiring the next generation of bookmakers and keeping this ancient human tradition alive.
