This work explores the ways flesh and the human form can be rendered to express what it means to live in our human bodies. Natasha believes that as a figurative painter it is an important responsibility to articulate figures as honest accounts of life. Humans have always been uncomfortable with aging, perceived flaws, and fighting against the natural transformation of our physical bodies. The theme of “mutable skin’ speaks to our natural vulnerability to decay, and to the miracle of regeneration and healing. The work is meant to be touched. Pull the zipper open to reveal a face beneath a face. Feel the tactical, sculptural quality of the paint and the elements of earth and textiles. The surface was created by the artist, who used a sewing machine to stitch together her old canvases. The piece is structurally sound; however, any decay that occurs during the exhibition adds to the element of a work that holds memory both thematically and through its materiality.
