Valerie was born, lives and creates, with gratitude on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish Nations. Her interdisciplinary practice melds photography, sculpture, and sound, rooted in a daily ritual of observation and deep connection with nature. She investigates the interconnectivity and reciprocity between humans and ecosystems, focusing on themes of regeneration, lifecycle, and continuum, exploring the intersection of perception, phenomenology and fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and consciousness. She is interested in the construction of images, evolving from an early documentary practise, knitting together analog and digital with alternative processes. Valerie works with ephemeral, sustainable materials—recycled paper, textiles, and found objects— prioritizing a minimal impact on the environment. She holds a BFA, ECU(2002), studied at Cooper Union (NYC), and completed an MA, UofP (2012), receiving an award of distinction for her thesis, Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Forestation. She is a four-time Canada Council grant recipient, (2006, 2020, 2021, 2025). Recent solo exhibitions include Understory:A Hidden Connection (SSCAC,2025) and Systems Shift (THIS Gallery,2025). Her work is held in public and private collections in Canada and internationally including The Surrey Art Gallery, Telus and The International Office of Migration.
