Natasha believes that as a figurative painter it is an important responsibility to articulate figures as honest accounts of life. Humans have always been uncomfortable with aging, perceived flaws, and fighting against the natural transformation of our physical bodies. The theme of “mutable skin’ speaks to our natural vulnerability to decay, and to the miracle of regeneration and healing. The work is meant to be touched. Pull the zipper open to reveal a face beneath a face. Feel the tactical, sculptural quality of the paint and the elements of earth and textiles. The surface was created by the artist, who used a sewing machine to stitch together her old canvases. This includes my project \"Do You Whisper a Tiny I'm Sorry?\" a collection of rugs in the shape of dead birds and scaled to hold the human body. I encourage the gallery visitor to interact with these rugs, allowing their body to shape to that of the bird at the moment of its last breath. Each bird has an accompanying photo and text that directs the viewers attention while engaging with the tactile surface. Through these practices, I honour my matrilineal lineage and the cultural symbolism of hair in Bangladeshi society.
